Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)
If you have worked in any noisy occupation after 1963 without hearing protection and now find difficultly in hearing others speak or suffer from noises or ringing in your ears or have experienced temporary deafness you may have a claim.
Do others complain your TV is too loud? Can't always hear the phone ringing? Do you have problems hearing people talk because of all of the background noises? If you have worked in a noisy environment you may have an element of noise induced hearing loss.
Workers who have been exposed to excessive noise levels will develop symptoms which show that their hearing has been affected. The following check list of symptoms and effects could help to recognize industrial deafness.
Symptoms
· Difficulty hearing other people speak
· Speech can be heard but the words aren't clear
· Sufferer may speak loudly because they can't hear their own voices clearly
· Speech becomes more difficult to hear when there is background noise
· Ringing in your ears
Some people are more sensitive to hearing damage than others. In a group of workers exposed to the same noise level one or two workers will experience deafness before the others. This is another reason why deafness is often put down to personal factors or to getting old.
